Vol. 369 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Central America.

2.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement concerning the present situation in Central America; and whether any further discussions are planned by the EC Foreign Minister.

We are very concerned at the present situation in Central America. The region remains affected by persistent violence and political, economic and human rights problems. It is a source of disappointment that the Contadora process has not yet led to agreement among the states of the region on the Act aimed at restoring peace. Nevertheless a concerted effort by the countries of Central America themselves, free of outside intervention, remains the most promising basis for obtaining peace and co-operation. Ireland will continue to support indigenous efforts for peace in the region.

Within the framework of European Political Cooperation the Foreign Ministers of the Twelve are in regular contact on the situation in Central America. A meeting between the Foreign Ministers of the Twelve and their Central American and Contadora counterparts will take place early next year. This will be the third such meeting since September 1984 and is aimed at assisting efforts to put an end to violence and instability in Central America.
