Vol. 369 No. 3

Written Answers. - Outbreak of Fire Blight Disease.

179.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the disease fire blight has arrived in this country; and if he will outline the measures he proposes to take to combat the threat.

Fire blight, which is a bacterial disease of certain rosaceous plants, was identified in recent weeks in the Dublin area. Statutory measures in relation to the import of host plants and internal controls against the spread of the disease are already in operation. The nursery trade and other specialist and commercial interests have been advised on the precautions to be taken. The co-operation of private gardeners regarding the detection and destruction of host plants has been sought. The position is being kept under constant review.
