Vol. 369 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clondalkin Paper Mills.

9.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the present operation of the Clondalkin Paper Mills at Clondalkin, County Dublin, indicating the extent of Government funds paid or committed to date, the number of employees at present working in the firm and a forecast; in so far as it may be possible, of the employment prospects in paper production at Clondalkin.

(Limerick East): The present operators of the Mills, Leinster Paper Mills Ltd., commenced a paper manufacturing operation in early 1986, having been engaged in a paper conversion operation since May. 1984.

Direct Government expenditure in relation to the present operation of the mills has amounted to almost £6.2 million. This figure comprises the purchase price of £1.733 million a figure of £3.324 million in respect of refurbishment of the mills in preparation for paper production, the balance of £1.142 million covering pre-purchase charges, care and maintenance costs incurred during the period that the mills were in Government ownership and the cost of engaging consultants to oversee the refurbishment.

The Industrial Development Authority have also paid almost £229,000 in training grants. In addition, I understand that the company have had discussions with Fóir Teoranta, but I am not in a position to indicate their involvement, if any, since such dealings are conducted on a confidential basis. I understand that about £.26 million remains to be spent in respect of completion of refurbishment and associated work at the mills. The company employ 220 people at the mills, and expect to employ about 230 at full production.

Is the Minister satisfied with developments in the Clondalkin mills? Is he satisfied the industry is well based and has a substantial future in regard to the provision of employment in that region, providing a useful domestic and export product?

(Limerick East): I would be concerned that any Irish industry would do well initially. I am satisfied that the employment targets are being achieved in this case. More than 220 people are being employed as a result of recommencement of work at Clondalkin.
