Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - Grant and Mortgage Subsidy Scheme.

52.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will agree to extend, by one month, the closing date for receipt of grant and mortgage subsidy applications under the old scheme because of the serious financial implications for people who may not be aware of the change and who are at present constructing new houses.

The announcement about the mortgage subsidy and previous new house grant schemes was made one month ago thus providing ample time for persons to submit applications under the old schemes. The announcement got extensive coverage in the media and I see no justification for an extension of the closing date for receipt of applications.

53.

asked the Minister for the Environment when approval will be issued to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford for a house improvement grant; and the amount for which approval will be given.

The application in this case relates to the building of an extension and the carrying out of repairs to a pre-1940 dwelling. A grant was paid for the house in June 1980 and accordingly a grant for an extension may be allowed only if there is overcrowding. Subject to confirmation that overcrowding exists and the receipt in the Department of evidence of planning permission, a repairs grant of £2,956 and an extension grant of £2,000 will be approved.
