Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - Supervision of Lamb Exports.

99.

Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been drawn to a newspaper account (details supplied) published in August 1986 concerning the way in which some Irish exporters present lamb carcases on the Paris market; and if he has any comments to make including any comment in regard to the responsibilities of the officials of his Department responsible for supervising exports.

I have seen the article in question. Selection of lambs for export is dictated by commercial considerations. Dressing and presentation of carcases are primarily matters for the factories themselves. By and large Irish lamb exports meet the highest standards. However it is a matter of regret that on occasion certain export consignments fall short of the optimum standards.

My Department's role does not cover the commercial area of day to day trading. The role of my Department's veterinary officials at sheepmeat export premises is to ensure compliance with the EC regulations on hygiene. So long as requirements in relation to hygiene are respected exports can take place in accordance with EC rules on free trade. The market itself will apply its own penalty for inferior presentation.

Since sheepmeat production offers scope for further expansion I am looking at a number of ways in which our export trade can be protected and improved. All affected interests will of course be consulted.
