Vol. 369 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of a submission from the Borough of Dún Laoghaire Vocational Education Committee in relation to the development of an outdoor pursuits centre in Dún Laoghaire; if he is further aware that the former nautical college in Dún Laoghaire would be a suitable location for such a centre; the action, if any, he intends taking in relation to the proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the submission received by the Commissioners of Public Works from the Dún Laoghaire Vocational Education Committee in relation to the establishment of an outdoor pursuits centre in the former nautical college premises in Dun Laoghaire Harbour. No decision has yet been reached on the future use of this property.

I am sorry. I was so involved in the previous question that I am not sure what the Minister said.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will repeat my answer for the Deputy. I am aware of the submission received by the Commissioners of Public Works from the Dún Laoghaire Vocational Education Committee in relation to the establishment of an outdoor pursuits centre in the former nautical college premises in Dún Laoghaire Harbour. No decision has yet been reached on the future use of this property.

Has a decision come to the Minister's desk or her Department in relation to the use of the old nautical college?

As Deputies are aware, a decision in principle has been made by the Government to transfer management of Dún Laoghaire Harbour from the Commissioners of Public Works to a new harbour authority. One of the first tasks of this new authority will be to provide accommodation for themselves. The former nautical college premises may be required for that purpose, at least in the short term. The premises might also be required for harbour purposes should it be decided to provide a unified car ferry terminal at Dún Laoghaire Harbour. Given these considerations it is not possible at present to decide on the long term future use of the premises but the position may become clearer in the next few months.

I am greateful for the Minister's response. I ask her to keep in mind that perhaps the former nautical college could contain all these elements she has just mentioned. It is a really magnificent location. It is a wonderful college which should never have been closed down. Unfortunately it was, and perhaps this is an opportunity to reinstate it. But I am grateful to the Minister for the comprehensive nature of her reply.
