Vol. 370 No. 9

Written Answers. - Barrow Bridge New Ross.

135.

asked the Minister for Communications if he is aware of the great restrictions that the Barrow railway bridge causes to shipping in New Ross port: if he is aware of the very small opening span and that a number of accidents have occurred consequent to the opening; if he is further aware of the great dependence of New Ross on port activity for employment and wealth; and if he will make a statement on the matter as to the proposals he has for the widening of the span in the Barrow bridge to allow larger ships up river to New Ross.

I am not convinced that the widening of the opening spans of the Barrow bridge is necessary on the basis of the type of vessel currently using New Ross Harbour. I am informed by my technical advisers that given the proper weather and tidal conditions, vessels of any beam up to 75 feet and 10,000 ton weight could pass through the span of the bridge.
