Vol. 370 No. 11

Written Answers. - Vocational Preparation and Training Programme Funding.

77.

asked the Minister for Education if he is satisfied that schools participating in the vocational preparation and training programme are receiving adequate funds to provide material and back-up for these courses; and if he is aware that some schools are obliged to charge up to £50 to participants in these programmes in order to cover the course adequately.

I am satisfied that adequate funds for materials and equipment are being provided to schools participating in the vocational preparation and training programme. Such funds in respect to vocational schools, community and comprehensive schools are channelled through their annual budgets.

In the case of secondary schools, the normal per capita grants are paid in respect of pupils attending VPTP courses. In addition these grants are augmented by the payment of a special grant of £125 per annum per pupil in respect of materials, equipment and other expenses connected with the running of the courses.

My Department is not aware of the alleged financial contribution being sought by some schools as referred to by the Deputy but if he identifies the schools involved I will have the matter investigated.
