Vol. 371 No. 2

Written Answers. - Town Gas Subsidy.

95.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will clarify the situation in relation to the subsidy on town gas, other than natural gas, for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford: if he is aware of the effect of this on town gas companies, such as Wexford town gas; if he will clarify the matter; and if he will reconsider it in view of the various anomalies, such as VAT on gas sales and on electricity sales.

The town gas subsidy was introduced in the budget of June 1975 to alleviate the adverse effects on consumers of steep increases in the price of naphtha. It was abolished by a Government decision on 23 December 1986 the price of the utilities base fuels having fallen considerably.

I have no plans to re-introduce the subsidy.
