Vol. 371 No. 9

Written Answers. - Timber Imports.

30.

asked the Minister for Energy the plans, if any, he has for the cessation of the annual importation of timber valued at £400 million; and his targets in this regard for 1987.

The £400 million of imports referred to by the Deputy embraces all timber imports including furniture and paper products. Only some £32 million represents conifer sawnwood which will be substituted by home-grown timber as production increases annually. It is estimated that in 1987 imports will be less than £30 million.
