asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons in prison at present for (a) default in the payment of fines, (b) failure to comply with orders under the Enforcement of Court Orders Acts; and if he will make a statement on the implications of the trend these figures indicate.

The number in custody on 6 April 1987 solely for default in the payment of fines was 27. The corresponding figure for failure to comply with orders under the Enforcement of Court Orders Acts was 12.
In addition there were 56 offenders serving custodial sentences for other offences and who were simultaneously serving periods in default of payment of fines. I have nothing to add in relation to these figures.
