Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Property Damage Limit.

328.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will amend the Road Traffic Act, 1961, relating to the £1,000 limit on claims which applies to visiting motorists whereby claims for material damage against a visiting motorist are apparently limited to not more than £1,000 regardless of the amount of damage actually caused to the Irish resident's vehicle who is involved in the accident.

Arising from the provisions of EC Directive 84/5/EEC of 30 December 1983 I propose to introduce legislation later this year providing for increases in the property damage limit of £1,000 under section 56 of the 1961 Act to £40,000 with effect from 31 December 1987 and to £80,000 with effect from 31 December 1990.
