Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Employment Schemes.

565.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will approve the social employment scheme for Cork County Council; the number of jobs which will be provided; and the estimated cost.

At present there are approximately 12 social employment scheme projects in operation by Cork County Council.

An application by the county council for a new project under this scheme involving a total of 84 workers to be located in a number of districts including Millstreet, Mallow, Kanturk, Mitchelstown and Fermoy, was received in my Department in February 1987 and was considered by the SES monitoring committee at its meeting in March 1987. Consideration of the application was deferred by the committee pending receipt of additional information on the type of work involved.

On receipt of this additional information, the monitoring committee will reconsider the application from Cork County Council.

566.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of social employment schemes proposed for County Kerry this year, and the details of same.

Statistics on the social employment scheme are at present compiled on the basis of NMS regions and it would not be possible without considerable effort to give detailed information on either current or forthcoming projects in individual counties until the computerisation of the scheme, which is currently underway, is complete.

I would, however, add for the Deputy's information that the south west region of the National Manpower Service which includes Cork and Kerry has been allocated a quota under the scheme of 1,300 man-years of employment for 1987.

567.

asked the Minister for Labour the reason the youth employment scheme for Annascaul, County Kerry is not going ahead as planned.

A social employment scheme (SES) project was operated during 1986 in Annascaul-Inch, County Kerry by Kerry County Council. An application for a 52 week extension to the project was approved in March 1987 on the basis that the work to be carried out would be developmental and not of an on-going or routine nature.

In order to remain within budget it is necessary to again operate regional quotas for the scheme during this year. The south west region of the NMS has a substantial list of projects awaiting clearance to commence and it may be some time before formal approval to commence can be given for the Annascaul-Inch development.
