Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

571.

asked the Minister for Health if a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3 who is suffering from leukaemia and receiving constant medical attention will be granted a medical card.

Eligibility for a medical card is determined solely by the chief executive officer of a health board.

Accordingly, in this instance, the Deputy's question has been referred to the Chief Executive Officer, Eastern Health Board, with a request that he examine the matter and reply directly to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.

572.

asked the Minister for Health the reason a medical card was withdrawn from a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 in September-October 1986 when her means had not changed; and whether she will receive a rebate for expenses incurred by her during the time for which she has receipts.

It is understood from the Eastern Health Board that the person in question was informed on 12 November that she was no longer entitled to a medical card as her income was in excess of the income guidelines then in operation.

Following her reapplication on 2 March 1987 she was issued with a medical card on the basis of the new guidelines effective from January 1987.

There is no provision for the refund of medical expenses for the period in respect of which she was not the holder of a medical card. Such persons would, however, be entitled to claim a refund of the cost of prescribed medicines and medical requisites in excess of £28 for use in a calendar month.
