Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Wexford Ophthalmic Services.

577.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the waiting list of three months for ophthalmic services in Wexford County Clinic; where no eye tests are currently being undertaken because of financial reductions imposed by him; and if he will outline the plans, if any, he has to resolve this crisis.

I am aware that there is a waiting list for ophthalmic services at the Wexford County Clinic. I understand that the South Eastern Health Board has temporarily suspended the adult sight testing scheme but will be reviewing the situation in the next few days. As Deputies are no doubt aware it is a matter for the health board to allocate available funds between the different services it provides as it sees fit. However, in the letter of 2 April 1987 which informed health boards of their allocations for 1987 I urged that community care services should be protected as far as possible.
