Because of the extent to which my Department's 1987 allocation of capital for the national schools building programme had already been committed prior to my assuming office, I am not in a position at this stage to sanction the signing of contracts to enable construction to commence on the new Whitechurch national school, County Dublin. I will, however, be keeping under close review the rate of expenditure on national schools under construction, and if the possibility emerges within the current financial year of releasing the project in question to contract, the required authorisation will be given.
