On 23 January 1987 my predecessor issued a press statement announcing that the outgoing Government had decided to establish an electoral commission to advise on the formation of Dáil constituencies.
However, the position is that the 1986 census figures are not yet available for Dáil constituencies or for the smaller areas, such as wards and district electoral areas, used for the formation of constituencies. Without these figures it is not possible to carry out a revision of constituencies.
I understand that the relevant figures will be published in about six months. At that stage the position in relation to constituencies will be examined.
