In relation to VAT, the information requested for the period mentioned is not available. However, in the period 1 January 1986 to 28 April 1987, the number of traders designated as operating in the building sector (which includes not only builders but also carpenters, plumbers, etc.) who registered for VAT was 3,009.
Precise information is not available on the corresponding number of concerns operating in the building sector which registered as employers for PAYE since 1 October, 1985 but it is estimated that the figure is of the order of 2,200.
