Vol. 372 No. 4

Written Answers. - Administration of Motor Tax.

82.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will redeploy staff and open motor taxation sub-offices in Killarney, Listowel, Dingle, Kenmare, Killorglin and Cahirciveen, County Kerry, with a view to relieving congestion at the motor taxation office in Tralee; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I had a meeting with representatives of the Local Government and Public Services Union on 15 April 1987 which resulted in a proposal to set up a working group comprising representatives of local authority staff and management and officials of my Department to advice on the administration of motor tax. The group will in particular examine:—

—the adequacy of existing arrangements for renewing motor tax

—the scope and cost of improving the existing system

—the effectiveness and cost of alternative arrangements.

The group will consider, inter-alia, the feasibility and cost effectiveness of renewals of motor tax at motor tax sub-offices as compared with alternative arrangements. I do not propose to take any action in regard to any proposals for the provision of sub-offices by licensing authorities, pending receipt and consideration of the group's report.
