Vol. 372 No. 8

Written Answers. - Commissions and Special Inquiries.

65.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason a sum of £145,000 has been provided in the Revised Estimates for 1987 for commission and special inquiries; and if he will give details of the nature of the work to be carried out by these inquiries and commissions.

The provision of £145,000 covers four items, as follows:—

1. Data Protection Authority

By far the greater part (£116,000) of this sum represents a contingency provision to meet the cost of a data protection authority under proposed data protection legislation. The Government has given approval to the drafting of such legislation, which will enable Ireland to ratify the Council of Europe Convention for the protection of individuals with regard to the automatic processing of personal data.

2. Fees to members of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal

£27,000 is provided to cover the fees paid to the members of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal in respect of work done in assessing cases.

3. Fees under Scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration

A provision of £1,000 was included to cover the possibility that payment of fees to independent experts may arise under the Scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration.

4. Commission on Gaming and Lotteries

A provision of £1,000 was included to cover the possible setting up of a Commission to examine the whole area of gaming and lotteries.
