Vol. 372 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Museum Usage.

6.

asked the Taoiseach if he has given permission for any parts of the National Museum building in Kildare Street, Dublin 2, to be used for sittings of the Seanad; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is an urgent need to provide alternative accommodation for Seanad Éireann in view of the major structural defects in the fabric of the premises until very recently used as the Seanad Chamber. A number of possible alternative venues, including a portion of the National Museum premises, are being examined in that context by the Office of Public Works. A final decision on the matter has yet to be taken.

Is the Taoiseach aware that the area of the National Museum being sought by the Office of Public Works is the Rotunda on the Leinster House side which is of great importance to the museum for the 300,000 or so visitors they have annually? Furthermore, is he aware that the museum authorities organise school group outings there? In view of that will the Taoiseach set his sights against giving over any part of the museum for the accommodation of the Seanad?

Of course I will be glad to bear in mind the arguments advanced by the Deputy in considering this matter. I would also have to ask him to bear in mind the overwhelming priority of providing adequate accommodation for Seanad Éireann.

I am not suggesting that the Seanad should not sit but are there not many other alternatives which can be explored before any such decision is taken? In view of the sad history of the Houses of the Oireachtas gradually acquiring space from the National Museum almost since the foundation of the State, will the Taoiseach resist it on this occasion as I understand the other alternative entrance to the museum would be totally inadequate?

I could not give the Deputy any such guarantee though I do share his concern about the needs of the National Museum and the importance it occupies in our cultural life but, in matters of this kind, we must take everything into account and then settle on some priority. Of course the Deputy will agree with me that no matter what we do we will disturb somebody.

Is the Taoiseach aware there is a major programme in progress for revitalising the entire National Museum which has had considerable success and that any curtailment of their space now would represent a huge setback?

The Deputy will be aware that a huge programme of revitalising Seanad Éireann has just taken place.

Will the Taoiseach say if talks have taken place between officials of the National Museum and representatives of the Houses of the Oireachtas? If so, have such talks commenced, or been concluded?

Discussions are going on among all those who have a legitimate interest. The discussions are being conducted mainly by the Office of Public Works.

Do I take it that a submission has been made on behalf of the National Museum and will be responded to by the Taoiseach when he comes to take a decision?

Has the Taoiseach received a submission from the National Museum? Will he be bearing that in mind in arriving at a decision?

All views will be taken into account. In fact, I would be glad to hear from the Deputy personally.
