Vol. 373 No. 4

Written Answers. - Castlebar, Mayo, Relief Road.

174.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement with regard to the proposed inner relief road for Castlebar, County Mayo, indicating, if possible, the development to date and whether a final proposed routing has been determined; and, if so, if he will indicate same.

The provision of a relief road in Castlebar was included in the 1985 Road Plan as a project to be considered for State funding after 1987 subject to cost benefit and other relevant studies to determine priorities.

The development of this proposal is primarily a matter for the road authority. Engineering proposals for the proposed relief road were submitted to my Department in 1984 by Mayo County Council and approval in principle was issued in January 1985 without prejudice to any statutory procedures that might arise. Subsequently, the council decided not to proceed with the road as originally proposed and alternative proposals were recommended by the local authority. These alternative proposals were not accepted by the Department at the time.

This project is now being re-examined in the context of the general review of the 1985 plan.
