Vol. 373 No. 5

Written Answers. - Protection of Fish and Wildlife.

44.

asked the Minister for the Marine the steps, if any, he is prepared to take to prevent further loss of fish life on the River Boyne, in Navan, County Meath where the water is diverted to generating electricity; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Primary responsibility for protection of fish at the hydro scheme site at Navan is a matter for the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board who are monitoring the situation closely.

The staff of my Department are at present examining detailed proposals for the hydro electric development and will be visiting the site shortly to assess the situation with a view to ensuring that adverse effects on fisheries if any will be kept to a minimum.

asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to take action against those people responsible for polluting the River Tolka who thereby endanger the fish species and cause hardship to the swans on the river; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is presumed the question refers to an oil pollution incident on the River Tolka at the end of October, 1986.

The Regional Fisheries Boards are responsible under Statute for the protection of fisheries, including the protection of fish bearing waters from pollution. The Eastern Regional Fisheries Board is the relevant board in this case and they have initiated legal proceedings against the people suspected of having committed the offence. These proceedings are continuing.

The question of the protection of wildlife, including swans, is a matter for the Minister for Energy, who now has responsibility for the Forest and Wildlife Service.
