Vol. 373 No. 6

Written Answers. - World University Service.

48.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the total of 140 medical students who are members of the World University Service who will be working as volunteers in understaffed and badly equipped hospitals of the Third World; if his attention has further been drawn to the previous two years in which his Department granted a total of IR£22,800 to the World University Service for the purchase of essential medical supplies for those hospitals to be taken out by Irish students; and if he will sanction a similar grant to the World University Service project this year.

I am aware of the particular situation relating to World University Service and that this organisation received grants previously from my Department. Because of the budgetary constraints on the NGO Co-Financing Scheme, their application could not be accepted for funding in 1987.
