Vol. 373 No. 6

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme Application.

77.

asked the Minister for Labour (1) if an application has been made by Milford community council development committee, County Cork, for a social employment scheme; (2) the date of their application; (3) the date on which they received an acknowledgement from his Department; and (4) when a decision will be given.

An application on behalf of Milford Parish Council Development Committee, County Cork to participate in the social employment scheme was received in the National Manpower Service office in Mallow, County Cork on 14 April 1987.

A condition of the scheme is that all applications should include letter(s) of approval from the local trade union(s) involved. The relevant letter was not furnished with this application. The applicant was then requested to furnish this information and it was received in the Mallow office on 13 May 1987. It was only then that the application could be transmitted to head office of my Department and was received there on 14 May 1987.

Under the terms of the scheme all applications to participate must be considered by the scheme's monitoring committee. This application will be considered at the next monitoring committee meeting.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will instruct the National Manpower Service to allow a person (details supplied) in Dublin 10 to whom a work experience scheme place has been offered by a potential employer to consent to that person being included in the scheme for the purpose of experience with the aforementioned employer.

The objective of the work experience programme is to enhance the employment prospects of young people who have left the education system and are having difficulty in obtaining work because they lack previous experience.

Before a programme can commence, a range of activities to be engaged in by the participant must be agreed between the National Manpower Service and the employer who intends to sponsor the programme.

In this case the employer involved has not as yet contacted the National Manpower Service. When that is done, immediate consideration will be given to the establishment of a programme for the person in question.
