Vol. 373 No. 12

Written Answers. - Home Oxygen Therapy.

145.

asked the Minister for Health if a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 who has been refused a medical card on appeal, can be provided with home oxygen as the cost of the oxygen of £101 per month is far in excess of this person's means.

Home oxygen therapy via concentrator or cylinder is available from health boards free of charge to medical card holders on the recommendation of a respiratory consultant. Persons who require home oxygen but do not hold a medical card may avail of the drugs refund scheme whereby the health boards refund any expenditure in excess of £28 in a calendar month on drugs and medicines prescribed for use in that month. The provision of oxygen is covered in this scheme.

It is understood that the person concerned availed of the drugs refund scheme in respect of the month of April 1987.
