Vol. 373 No. 12

Business of Dáil.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the recent appointment of the Commandant of the Military College.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the urgent question of second level education at Castleknock, Dublin.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I failed to get permission to raise an issue in the form of a Private Notice Question and I should like permission to raise it on the Adjournment. I am referring to the termination of the contracts of temporary teachers; the inability of many institutions to advertise courses; the inability of institutions to guarantee that courses will be completed because of the cuts in the allocation to the vocational sector——

The Deputy need not elaborate now. The gist of the question is sufficient for the Chair.

——and the failure of the Department of Education to provide an answer to these questions.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to seek clarification from the Taoiseach in relation to a statement made in the House last week by a Minister of State in regard to the amount of State grants made available to the Goodman international group. That Minister of State stated that £25 million was the maximum that would be made available notwithstanding the fact that the following day the Government in the Finance Bill, in particular in section 25, introduced a facility whereby the grants can be written off as a tax liability up to a maximum of 50 per cent. I would like some clarification from the Taoiseach. Otherwise I will have no choice but to resort to the procedure, which I hesitate to do, and say that this House was misled on the occasion when we were informed that only £25 million of State money would be——

A speech at this stage is not in order.

Some clarification is necessary. I ask the Taoiseach, or the Minister of State, on this occasion or at the first possible opportunity, to clarify this matter for the House and for the taxpayer.

I will do that.

I tabled a Private Notice Question which you disallowed. I wish to raise the following matter on the Adjournment: to ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether he has conducted an investigation as to whether British Intelligence procured Irish passports from the North and passed them to the CIA——

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the possibility of the closure of the Mayo News in Westport with the consequent loss of jobs and the demise of a century of tradition.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

As time is rapidly running out in this session, would the Taoiseach indicate whether, in the coming sessions — and if he is still in Government — he will allow time for Items Nos. 29 and 30 on the Order Paper which deal with the repeal of section 31 of the Broadcasting Authority Act? Motions to this effect have been on the Order Paper since the beginning of this session and I wonder if the Government would order them in the coming sessions, God willing and the electorate allowing it?

Private Members' Business.

Deputy De Rossa.

It all depends on how the Deputy votes tomorrow night.

A Deputy

Is the Taoiseach open to discussion?

I mean in Private Members' time.

May I raise on the Adjournment the closure of wards and the sacking of nurses in Temple Street Hospital arising from the reduction in their budget?

I will communicate with the Deputy.
