Vol. 373 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cuban Airlines.

5.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the progress to date on the question of Cubana Airlines using the facilities at Shannon airport; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that a Cuban airline has recently expressed to Aer Rianta an interest in expanding its services through Shannon and discussions between both parties are to be resumed shortly. I have also recently received a request from the civil aviation authorities in Cuba to initiate discussions to conclude an air services agreement which would permit the establishment of regular air services between our countries. Discussions with the Cuban authorities will commence shortly.

In view of the Minister's reply, are we to assume that it is Government policy to maintain Shannon airport as the sole transatlantic airport for this country.

The Deputy is extending the scope of this question.

That does not arise on this question but we are envisaging expanding the Cuban airline services through Shannon.
