Vol. 373 No. 12

Written Answers. - EC Funding for Ports Infrastructure.

87.

asked the Minister for the Marine if the restoration of the great south wall at Dublin Port, County Dublin is a project that will qualify for EC funding; if he will pursue the recently renewed request of the Dublin Port and Docks Board for EC funding in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The only source of EC funding for ports infrastructure is the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This fund may assist in the creation of new port infrastructure provided the criteria for fund assistance are met. The maintenance and restoration of an existing structure such as the great south wall at Dublin Port would not however be eligible for ERDF assistance.

EC financial assistance is provided for pilot projects to conserve the Community's architectural heritage. I am making inquiries concerning the possibility of aid from this source and I will let Dublin Port and Docks Board know the outcome. I understand however that the total amount available under this heading for projects throughout all member states is in the Community context very small.
