Vol. 374 No. 3

Written Answers. - VEC College Appointment.

132.

asked the Minister for Education the reason persons (details supplied) in County Limerick were appointed to a lecturer I post in a VEC college as they failed to meet necessary application requirements; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The position is that in response to a written inquiry my Department issued a letter on 30 September 1987 outlining the minimum qualifications currently required for appointment through open competition to a permanent whole-time lecturer I post in electronic engineering in a third-level VEC college.

The position in relation to the two appointments referred to in the Deputy's question is that in one case my Department approved an appointment, following open competition, to a permanent whole-time lecturer I post in marine electronics in Limerick CoACT on 30 October 1981. In the other case my Department approved an appointment, following open competition, to a Class III post in marine electronics in Limerick CoACT on 5 March 1980. The latter appointee was subsequently upgraded to college teacher level and then to lecturer I level following internal promotion agreements authorised under the terms of Agreed Report Nos. 14/79 and 5/82. My Department is satisfied that in each case the minimum requirements of the posts in question were met.
