asked the Minister for Social Welfare (a) the names of all persons who are provided with cars by the State, excluding members of the Government (b) the Departments of State, semi-State agencies and boards constituted by the Government where these persons are employed and the offices they hold (c) the number of drivers employed, the total cost in each case and the type of use for which these cars are permitted and (d) the total overall cost to the State.

Seventeen officers of my Department use cars in connection with sickness visitation and local agency inspection duties related to the disability benefit scheme. The cars are not used for any purpose other than the officers' official duties.

The officers who use these cars are serving in the grades of clerical officer, staff officer and executive officer, and their names are as follows: H. Pierce, P. McWilliams, G. O'Connor, M. Markham, B. Goulding, R. Burke, M. Boyle, M. Curtis, J. Crawford, G. Cannon, B. Dunne, M. Maher, C. Maher, M. Kennedy, E. Collins, M. O'Connor, F. McArdle.

My Department do not employ drivers.

The overall cost in 1986 for the provision and maintenance of official cars was £29,600.
