asked the Minister for Social Welfare what the unemployment figures for September 1987 would have been if the Jobsearch scheme had not commenced.
It is not possible to be precise about the complete impact of the Jobsearch Programme on the live register. The programme is specially designed to be of help to those long term unemployed on the register in their search for work, social employment or training programmes. A side effect of this programme is that it can identify people who are not available for or genuinely seeking work.
Figures for the period up to 25 September 1987 show that those who had their cases reviewed resulting in disallowances and those who left the live register voluntarily following offers of assistance under the programme totalled over 6,500.
