Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - State Cars.

191.

asked the Minister for Labour (a) the names of all persons who are provided with cars by the State, excluding members of the Government (b) the Departments of State, semi-State agencies and boards constituted by the Government where these persons are employed and the offices they hold (c) the number of drivers employed, the total cost in each case and the type of use for which these cars are permitted and (d) the total overall cost to the State.

The Department of Labour does not provide any of its staff with cars. Of the bodies coming under the aegis of the Department, CERT and the Youth Employment Agency provide cars to certain members of staff, as detailed below. The Deputy will appreciate that it is not the practice to give names of individual officers.

CERT supplies cars to its eight regional training advisors and its Director, at a total cost in 1986 of £27,665. In addition, these staff members are reimbursed for petrol used in relation to mileage incurred in the course of their duties only. CERT also operates a car for transit between training centres, at a total cost in 1986 of £4,012. The net cost to the Exchequer, after assistance from the European Social Fund, is approximately £14,255.

The Youth Employment Agency owns one car which is principally, but not exclusively, driven by the chief executive, at a total cost in 1986 of £2,594.
