Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dangerous Substances Conveyance.

195.

asked the Minister for Health the proposals, if any, he has to change the law with regard to making it an offence to leave toxic drugs unattended in vehicles in public places; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Misuse of Drugs (Safe Custody) Regulations, 1982, (S.I. No. 321 of 1982) impose an obligation on all persons lawfully having controlled drugs (that is those specified in the Schedule to the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977) to ensure that, so far as circumstances permit, such drugs are kept in a locked fixed receptacle which can be opened only by him or by a person authorised by him.

I do not propose to extend the statutory requirement to cover vehicles in public places, as in practical terms, such control would be unenforceable.
