Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - Veteran and Vintage Cars Road Tax.

62.

asked the Minister for Finance in respect of the Finance (Excise Duties) (Vehicles) Act, 1952 the plans, if any, he has to introduce a low level flat rate payment of road tax for veteran and vintage cars.

I have no plans to make such a change. A road tax relief for veteran and vintage motor vehicles would present serious practical difficulties — for example, in deciding the minimum qualifying age for the vehicles concerned, and in dealing with vehicles reconditioned with substantial replacement of parts. It would also be difficult to justify low road tax rates for what could be termed hobby vehicles while ordinary motor vehicles — essentials to many members of the community — had to remain chargeable to road tax at higher rates for budgetary reasons.
