asked the Minister for Education the amount of money it is intended to save on the education pay bill in 1988, as a result of new pupil-teacher ratios at (1) primary level and (2) post-primary level, announced by her on 22 October 1987.

29.
It is estimated that the new pupil-teacher ratios will result in the following savings in the cost in 1988 of teachers' salaries: (a) primary teachers, £10 million; (b) post-primary teachers, £4.4 million.
These figures reflect the savings in salary only, and do not take into account the cost of awards payable under the terms of the voluntary redundancy/early retirement scheme for teachers. As the details of this scheme have not yet been finalised I am not in a position to give costings at this stage.
