Vol. 374 No. 11

Written Answers. - Property Tax.

59.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the expected total yield of residential property tax for the years 1985 to 1987 respectively (b) the number of individuals making such payments in each of the said years (c) the number of payments that exceeded (i) £1,000 (ii) £5,000 (iii) £10,000 and (iv) £20,000; and whether he will make a statement on the effectiveness of recovery of the tax.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the total yield of residential property tax for the valuation date 5 April 1985 is estimated at £2 million and the estimated number of taxpayers involved is 6,200. The corresponding figures for the valuation date 5 April 1986, are £1.7 million and 5,900 respectively.

The tax in respect of the valuation date 5 April 1987 is not due until 1 October 1987 so that it is too early to forecast what the estimated total yield and number of taxpayers for that valuation date will be, beyond saying that it is estimated that the figures will be not less than those for the 1986 valuation date.

In relation to (c) of the question, statistics are not available which would enable the required information to be given.

As regards the final part of the question, I am advised that the recovery of any outstanding tax will not present a problem.
