As regards my Department: (a) (b) the scheme of early retirement-redeployment hitherto in force was devised to be applied only in areas where identified redundancy or overstaffing existed. The scheme was not relevant to my Department as these conditions did not exist; (c) the number of applications for career breaks received since 1 August 1987 is 22, of which 17 have been approved to-date.
