Official employment estimates are compiled only on an annual basis in respect of mid-April. The most recent estimates for mid-April 1986 are given in the following table.

Employment estimates for more recent periods are available for all industry (that is manufacturing industry together with mining, quarrying, turf production, electricity, gas and water supply) from the quarterly industrial inquiry for establishments with three or more persons engaged. These quarterly estimates are given in the following table on a seasonally adjusted basis for the period March 1986 to June 1987 which is the latest date for which information is available.
