Vol. 375 No. 8

Written Answers. - Rate Collectors.

65.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of rate collectors who are still employed by local authorities under his control; the average number of ratings per collector; the average remuneration of rate collectors; the total remuneration expressed as a percentage of the amount collected; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Based on information supplied by local authorities to my Department the number of rate collectors currently employed by local authorities has been reduced to 58. Information is not available in the Department on the number of ratings per collector. While the salaries of rate collectors are generally related to the clerical officer scale their remuneration varies not only from local authority to local authority but even within individual local authorities. The total remuneration of rate collectors as a percentage of the 1987 warrant is .34 per cent. However, rates are also collected by revenue collectors and by other means such as office collection. In addition, many of the remaining rate collectors are engaged in the collection of other revenues in addition to rates on commercial premises.
