asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has satisfied himself that the ban on the use of hormone implants, as growth promoters in beef cattle, as is laid down by his Department is being strictly observed in view of the disconcerting statements to the contrary by veterinary sources and other concerned parties; and the plans, if any, he has to control the current widespread availability of such implants.

The sale and use of hormones is strictly controlled under regulations introduced and implemented by my Department. The regulations are enforced by authorised officers who regularly carry out investigations to ensure that hormones and other controlled substances are not sold or used illegally. While a number of breaches of the regulations have been detected and successfully prosecuted in the courts, there is no evidence of widespread illegal availability or use of hormone implants.
