Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointment for Special Education.

232.

asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction the appointment of a teacher for ten students in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 24 who were assessed and recommended for special education; and if her attention has been drawn to the fact that these students have been denied special education for the past few months.

The Department have received an application for the establishment of a special class for mildly mentally handicapped pupils in the school referred to by the Deputy. In order to establish a special class, there must be a minimum of 15 suitably psychologically assessed pupils for enrolment, with no alternative provision available for them.

There is not a sufficient number of pupils in this case to warrant the establishment of a special class. Furthermore, the children in question can be facilitated in existing classes attached to schools in the locality.
