Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Apartheid Policy.

28.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action, if any, which has been agreed at EPC level to combat the repugnant policy of apartheid as practised by the South African Government.

In September 1985 and September 1986 the Twelve member states of the Community adopted a series of measures both restrictive and positive, to express disapproval of the South African Government's policy of apartheid and to put pressure on that Government peacefully to abandon apartheid. The restrictive measures included bans on the importation of iron, steel and gold coins from South Africa as well as a ban on new investment by the Twelve in South Africa. The positive measures included a programme of assistance to non-violent opponents of apartheid which is adminstered by the EC Commission.
