Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Aid to Sudan.

40.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline the extent of Ireland's aid to Sudan; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Total Irish development assistance to Sudan in 1987 will be approximately £1.9 million.

The Sudan is one of four priority countries for Irish bilateral assistance. Expenditure on bilateral aid programme projects in 1987 is expected to be in the region of £1.5 million, with assistance being provided in the areas of agriculture, research, education, village water supply, primary health care and forestry. In addition, the Sudan has received assistance under the NGO co-financing scheme, the international fertiliser supply scheme, the followship programme and from the disaster relief fund.
