Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Water Pollution Legislation.

202.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposal to redefine the definition of pollution under the provisions of the Water Pollution Act, 1977, so as to include discharges from vessels using the River Shannon navigation, in order to enable local authorities to take action against such pollution; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised that discharges from vessels to inland waters are already subject to the control provisions of the Local Government (Water Pollution) Act, 1977. I am not aware of pollution problems in inland waters arising from the operation of vessels. I will, however, keep the situation under review and, if the need arises, will consider additional controls on the keeping and use of vessels as provided for in section 27 of the Act.
