asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the current total killing capacity available to the meat industry in this country in respect of (a) cattle (b) sheep and (c) pigs at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Killing Capacity of Meat Industry.
96.
The present maximum killing capacity of export meat plants licensed by me is estimated as follows:—
Head per week |
|
Cattle |
63,000 |
Sheep |
74,000 |
Pigs |
50,000 |
Capacity in the longer term would be affected by such factors as efficiency of slaughter lines and facilities for chilling, freezing and storing. In relation to pigs, future killing capacity will also be affected by current plans for extensive rationalisation, covering both domestic and export premises.
