Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Gweedore (Donegal) Turf Burning Station.

188.

asked the Minister for Energy if, in view of the fact that the ESB turf burning station at Meenacuing, Gweedore, County Donegal, has not been in a position to take supplies of turf from producers in 1987 and has actually been closed since July 1987 and in view of the resultant difficulties for turf producers in the area, it is proposed to re-open the station; and, if so, the steps, if any, which are being taken to guarantee turf producers in the area that supplies will be taken on a regular basis.

Gweedore generating station came off load in June 1987 when all available peat had been used. The station is not available at the moment due to essential maintenance. The station will re-open in April 1988 and will remain open, provided no major technical troubles develop, as long as adequate supplies of turf are available to the ESB.
