Mr. Roche

asked the Minister for the Environment the rate of service charge for water, sewerage, refuse and other services levied by each local authority for the financial year 1988; the amount of money outstanding in each authority for service charges at the commencement of the 1987 financial year; the total amount of service charges billed by each authority for 1987; and the amount of charges outstanding at the close of the 1987 financial year.

In so far as it is available the information requested by the Deputy is set out in the following tabular statements. The arrears and amounts billed by each authority for 1987 are gross figures in that they do not take into account any subsequent deductions arising from hardship waivers, discount schemes, amounts struck off, etc.

Details of the charges outstanding at the close of 1987 are not yet available.

Mr. McGinley

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that some local authorities are dispensing with the services of environmental health officers whom they have traditionally employed by way of an agency basis from the health board; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is a matter for the county or city manager concerned to determine whether and to what extent the services of health board staff, including environmental health officers, are required for the purposes of the local authorities under his control.
