Vol. 377 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin Local Authority Flats.

27.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has plans to make finance available to Dublin Corporation during the Millennium to undertake a major refurbishment programme of local authority flats with a view to removing housing squalor in Dublin's inner city.

31.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a proposal from Dublin Corporation for the refurbishment of St. Mary's Mansions, Seán MacDermott Street, Dublin 1; if the necessary funds will be made available in 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 31 together.

The management and maintenance of their dwellings is a matter for the housing authority concerned. However, financial assistance is available to authorities from my Department to carry out approved refurbishment works to certain housing estates. It is a matter for authorities to formulate proposals and submit them to my Department for consideration. Preliminary proposals, which were recently received from Dublin Corporation in respect of a number of estates, including St. Mary's Mansions, are being examined. A decision on these proposals will be conveyed to the Corporation as soon as possible.

Claims received from authorities for a capital allocation for 1988 under the remedial works scheme are at present being examined with a view to making the allocations as soon as possible.
