Vol. 377 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Primary School Classes.

7.

asked the Minister for Education the numbers of primary school classes consisting of fewer than 20 or fewer than ten pupils at the latest date for which these, or similar breakdown statistics are available.

Of the 18,318 ordinary classes in national schools in the 1985-86 academic year, the latest year for which such data is available, 1,133 consisted of fewer than 20 pupils including 36 classes that consisted of fewer than ten pupils. That is a very startling answer.

Can the Minister tell us how many of those classes of fewer than ten and those of fewer than 20 are remedial classes?

I do not have that information with me.

But that was the point of my question.

Information given in my reply refers to ordinary classes in national schools. There are 1,133 consisting of less than 20 pupils and 36 classes consisting of less than ten pupils. I should like to add that there are 1,441 classes of 20 pupils or less, 7,000 of 21 to 30 and 6,000 of 31 to 35. That is startling.

Deputy Donal Moynihan did not turn up to put his question to the Minister.

Is the Deputy running a roll call?
